Our Service Programs

As a tutor and mentor with City Year Rhode Island, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop Rhode Island's next generation of leaders.  Whether working in a classroom or during out of school time, each corps member will spend his or her 1,700 hours of service with a diverse population of students, as well as fellow corps members.

Through City Year’s Whole School, Whole Child initiative, you will work with schools to provide structured academic support, create in-school and after-school programs, and generate positive school climate.City Year New Rhode Island service programs include in-school and after-school service, youth leadership, and community engagement.

Academic Support
Corps members at City Year Rhode Island who work on school-based teams provide in-class support in middle school classrooms and academically mentor at-risk students four days every week. Each school year teachers identify students who are struggling academically and corps members work one-on-one and in small groups throughout the year to improve student performance. Classroom placements depend on the need of each school, but generally include tutoring and mentoring in grades 5 through 8, and in subjects including math, science, language arts, and social studies.

AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE

City Year Rhode Island corps members serve in after-school programs to provide students with a safe, structured, and engaging environment.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

One of the important ways City Year corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Rhode Island middle school students about their ability to make a difference.

Young Heroes

Young Heroes is City Year’s premier youth leadership initiative. Middle school students serve 100 hours on Saturdays from January through May and earn the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their efforts.Throughout the program they learn about teamwork, diversity, and leadership and are exposed to major social and community issues.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:

  • Painting murals
  • Planting gardens
  • Creating playspaces
  • Renovating schools
  • Refurbishing community centers

By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
