City Year Patch

History

In 1996 a visionary delegation of 18 Philadelphia leaders led by Joe Banner and Phil Behr visit City Year's Headquarters in Boston to press for a City Year site in Philadelphia. In the fall of 1997 City Year Greater Philadelphia becomes the 9th site nationally. 73 Corps Members pledge to serve as then City Council President John F. Street and then Mayor Ed Rendell witness the swearing in.

Since 1997, City Year Greater Philadelphia has:

  • Put more than 1650 corps members into service
  • Made a difference in the lives more than 100,000 children
  • Served over 2,000,000 hours in the Philadelphia community
  • Engaged 25,000 volunteers at events across the city
  • Provided more than 370,000 hours of trainings for corps members
