Mayor Nutter Works Up a Sweat With 'City Year' Youth

by KYW's Al Novack

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter paid a visit on Monday morning to show his personal support for a community service program for young people. And he got a workout while he was there.

Mayor Nutter paid a visit to Thomas Paine Plaza outside the Municipal Services Building, where a group called City Year Corps was having its regular Monday morning rally. The mayor joined the 200 members of the group as they were doing their morning workout.

Nutter says he first came in contact with the City Year program when he visited the city of Boston in 1997:

"One thing led to another and I said, 'Let's bring this to Philadelphia."

The program has young men and women between the ages of 17 and 24 take a year off after they graduate from high school to do all kinds of community service and help improve the city. Nutter is impressed with their dedication:

"They represent the hope and promise for the future because they're really doing something in our communities."

The group congratulated Nutter on his election and thanked him for his support and by presenting him with a member's jacket and a plaque.
