When you serve with City Year every day is a chance to make a difference. No two days will be exactly alike, but here is an example of what a typical day in the life of a corps member is like with City Year New York.
A Day With Diana Vining
8:15 am -- Meet up with my teammates and fellow corps members at Union Square for Unity Rally. Unity Rally prepares us for a powerful day of service through PT (physical training), daily announcements, and public engagement.
8:45 am -- Travel with my teammates on the 4/5 subway train to my school in Harlem.
9:30 am -- I prepare to lead a small group of students, from the fifth grade class I am assigned to, helping them to improve their reading skills and comprehension.
10:00 am -- I meet with four of my fifth grade students, we read a book together and then work on their comprehension skills.
11:00 am -- I prepare with teammates for Bringing Books to Life lesson.
11:30 am – We lead a Bringing Books to Life lesson for a class of first graders.
12:00 pm – Lunch (if Tuesday or Thursday meet with students for Newspaper Club).
1:00 pm – We lead a Bringing Books to Life lesson for a class of second graders.
2:00 pm – Prepare with teammates to lead after-school activity about the importance of making healthy choices as part of the Starfish Corps program.
3:00 pm – Lead Starfish after-school activity with third and fourth graders.
4:00 pm -- I spend time helping the Starfish participants with their homework.
5:30 pm – My team meets up to discuss the day and review the schedule for tomorrow.
