City Year Patch

Our Service Programs

"It is rare to find an organization that provides such meaningful services and connects such a wide array of communities, students, volunteers, and corporations. The unique ability to direct the diverse talents and goals of these different groups toward a common purpose is what makes City Year an example to emulate."
- NYC Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein

As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year New York service programs include in-school and after-school service, youth leadership, and community engagement

In-School Service Programs

When serving in the schools of New York City, you will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring.  You will help students who may not receive enough attention to succeed academically due to class size or other class dynamics.

You will also participate in the following specialized City Year New York programs:

  • Bringing Books to Life

Themed library projects that promote literacy through creative expression, read-alouds and age-appropriate lesson plans.

  • Lunch Clubs

Developing confidence and public speaking skills through extracurricular programs like Leadership Council, physical fitness, newspaper and arts clubs.

City Year New York corps members serve in after-school programs to provide students with a safe, structured, and engaging environment.

CAMP CITY YEAR

Camp City Year is a positive day camp experience conducted during winter break, providing assistance to working parents while teaching the core City Year values of diversity, service and responsibility.

Youth Leadership

One of the important ways City Year New York corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach New York City  elementary, middle school, and high school students about their ability to make a difference.

STARFISH CORPS

In the Starfish Corps, third through sixth graders experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution in this literacy-based service program.

YOUNG HEROES

Young Heroes is City Year’s premier youth leadership initiative. Middle school students serve 100 hours on Saturdays from January through May and earn the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their efforts.

CITY HEROES

City Heroes is a weekend leadership development and social awareness program for high school students, who learn to lead others in tackling issues that directly affect their communities. City Year New York will launch City Heroes in the fall of 2008.

Community Transformation

In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:

  • Painting murals
  • Planting gardens
  • Creating playspaces
  • Renovating schools
  • Refurbishing community centers

By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
