General Information

New Hamphire became the first post-colonial sovereign nation in the Americas when it broke off from Great Britian in January 1776, and was one of the original thirteen states that founded the United States of America six months later.

Today, New Hampshire is home to over 1.3 million people and is the only state with neither a general sales tax nor a personal income tax at either the state or local level.

Business & Economy

Since the late 1800s manufacturing has been important in the state. Textile mills and factories produced a variety of goods and products into the 21st century. Over recent years, however, with the local decline in manufacturing year-round tourism is now the state's leading industry. Many visitors come to enjoy the state's beaches, mountains, and lakes.

Geography

New Hampshire, one of the New England states, is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, Vermont to the west, the Canadian province of Quebec to the northwest and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Concord is the capital and third largest city; the largest city is Manchester, followed by Nashua.

Higher Education

There are 23 accredited, degree-granting, postsecondary institutions operating in the state including such univesities as the University of New Hampshire, Southern New Hampshire University, Darmouth College, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Franklin Pierce College and Hesser College.

Politics

New Hampshire's constitution, adopted in 1784, is the second oldest in the country. The New Hampshire presidential primary is among the first to be held in election years and has often forecast national trends or influenced election outcomes.

Southern New Hampshire lays claim to 18 miles of coastline with 8 sandy beaches that are a popular draw for water sports, surfing, sailing, beach volleyball and relaxing.

Historic New England

With it's unique geograpghic location New Hampshire has easy acces to several great places to visit throughout New England. Both Boston, MA and Portland, ME are just an hour away by car or train and offer addtional opportunities for entertainment, sports, shopping and much more.
