MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. SERVICE DAY

On Monday, January 16, 2012, over 8,000 volunteers will join City Year’s 2,000 corps members at locations across the United States to participate in a day of service to commemorate the civil rights movement and honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In Miami, the opportunity to join in service followed inspiring opening ceremonies launching City Year’s Heroes programs, which engage middle school and high school students in community service and leadership development.
City Year celebrates Dr. King's birthday as a "day ON, not a day off” by honoring his legacy through service projects such as painting murals, restoring park areas, landscaping community spaces and leading educational activities for children. Over 450 people came out to City Year Miami's service last year to help renovate 2 schools in the Liberty City Community with murals, painting, gardening and construction projects.
