
Set on the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol, 73 corps members dedicated a year of service on Opening Day to the state of Louisiana, serving in 4 schools in Baton Rouge and 3 schools in New Orleans. Several guest speakers spoke of the impact that City Year has in Louisiana schools, the power of the idealism and energy of City Year corps members, and the transformative experience that City Year provides corps members.
Opening Day speakers included:
- Janet Pace, Executive Director of the Louisiana Serve Commission
- Dr. Herman Brister, Associate Superintendent for Instructional Support Services; spoke on behalf of newly appointed East Baton Rouge School Board Superintendent John Dilworth
- Betty Jean Wolfe, Chief Administrative Officer for the New Orleans Recovery School District
- Dr. Kirby Goidel, Director of the Public Policy Research Lab at LSU and City Year Board Member
- Cherie Rankin, 2007-2008 City Year Louisiana Alum and current City Year Louisiana Development Manager
Following the ceremony, corps members transitioned into an afternoon of service at three Baton Rouge schools.
