Before Hurricane Katrina devastated the communities and schools Louisiana, Louisiana’s schools were in crisis. Thousands of students were not able to pass the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) test and many of the school systems were run by the state. Since the hurricanes hit in 2005, these issues have only been compounded. Now, schools in Baton Rouge suffer from severe over crowding and schools in New Orleans pose serious health hazards – neither condition promoting a positive learning environment.

You can be a part of rebuilding Louisiana’s communities and help make positive change in the lives of these students as a City Year Louisiana corps member. As a tutor and mentor, you will work in high-need communities, where you will become a powerful role model to youth and help create solutions for community problems.
