As a tutor and mentor with City Year Louisiana, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help the next generation of young leaders and strengthen Louisiana's communities. City Year Louisiana service programs include school-based service and community engagement.
School-Based Service
Corps members serve in schools as tutors, mentors, role models and leaders of after-school programs. As a City Year corps member, you will help students stay on track - and get back on track to graduate - by helping improve course performance, attendance and behavior.
As near-peers who begin their service before the first bell rings and stay until the last child leaves the after-school program, corps members are uniquely able to provide the right interventions to the right students at the right time through:
- academic support;
- attendance monitoring and incentives;
- positive behavior support;
- after-school programming; and
- in-school programs and activities such as assemblies and celebrations that improve the overall school environment.
Currently, City Year Louisiana corps member teams serve in eight schools throughout the Baton Rouge and New Orleans areas:
- In Baton Rouge:
- Magnolia Woods Elementary School
- Progress Elementary School
- Glen Oaks Park Elementary
- Broadmore Middle
- In New Orleans:
- Walter L.Cohen High School
- John McDonogh High School
- SciTech Academy at Laurel School
- D.R. Batiste Cultural Arts Academy at Live Oak School
Community Transformation
City Year Louisiana corps members participate in service projects throughout the year. Projects range from small projects like passing out fire safety information to residents in Baton Rouge, to large projects like transforming elementary schools in New Orleans. For information about how groups of employees or conventions can become involved with physical service in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, please contact Bethany Housman.
