About City Year
City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these young diverse leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across the United States and in South Africa.
This year, City Year’s 1500 young leaders, who are 17 to 24 years old, will complete more than 2.5 million hours of service through the following activities:
- Tutoring, mentoring and serving as role models to help children and schools succeed;
- Leading after-school programs and school vacation programs;
- Engaging students of all ages in community service and leadership development activities;
- Planning and leading transformational service projects.

About City Year Los Angeles
City Year Los Angeles was launched in 2007 to address the challenges of a diverse and dynamic metropolis. Our 150 corps members work full-time in communities and in schools as tutors, mentors and role models for more than 1,100 students. We serve directly in 12 elementary and middle schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to meet the needs of the district’s most under-resourced schools in Watts, East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, and Pico-Union. In addition, we run weekend service and leadership programs for middle school and high school students from across the Los Angeles region, and engage thousands of Angelenos in transformative community service to revitalize parks, schools and community centers.
Addressing the Dropout Crisis in Los Angeles
At our National Leadership Summit in June, City Year announced In School & On Track: A National Challenge, an initiative to scale City Year programs to reach at least 50% of all the youth falling off-track to graduate from high school in our 19 U.S. locations. City Year Los Angeles' long-term strategy will be to deploy teams of corps members to high schools where graduation rates are lowest, and to the elementary and middle schools that feed into those high schools which have the most "off-track" students. This will require scaling our programs to reach a set of high need zones in Los Angeles, to reach a critical mass of 50% of all the students who are falling off-track. CYLA is working hard to meet this challenge and ensure that we are growing in a sustainable way while addressing the critical needs in our community.
