CITY YEAR LOS ANGELES

FOUNDED 2007

City Year Los Angeles is the eighteenth site to join the City Year network, which annually unites 1,500 young adults , ages 17-24, from diverse backgrounds for a demanding year of service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world.  The site launched with 75 inaugural corps members, each of whom will serve 1,700 hours, largely dedicated to underserved students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In 2007, Benjamin Goldhirsh, Director of the Goldhirsh Foundation, and Andrew and Ellen Hauptman, Co-Chairs of the Hauptman Family Foundation, jointly announced a $4 million donation that spearheaded the launch of City Year Los Angeles. The Goldhirsh Foundation funded a challenge grant to start City Year Los Angeles with a $2 million gift in 2006, which was then matched by a $2 million grant from the Hauptman Family Foundation in 2007.  Andrew Hauptman will serve as the Chair of the Board and work closely with staff and fellow board members Ellen Hauptman and Ben Goldhirsh to ensure the site’s success.
