City Year Los Angeles engages young people between the ages of 17 to 24 in a full-time year of service. Through this service our corps members assist students and schools by providing academic support and learning enrichment programs in order to positively impact student academic achievement and school climate.
SCHOOL-BASED SERVICE
As tutors, mentors and role models, City Year Los Angeles corps members make a difference in the lives of children through school-based service that improves:
SCHOOL CLIMATE
City Year, in partnership with school leadership, implements programs designed to increase student satisfaction and excitement about learning. Through creative, interactive programming and positive mentor relationships, students become more engaged in learning and school.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Corps members provide academic support to students. Services include: one-on-one and small group literacy tutoring, lunch time programming, learning enrichment activities, and after-school programming.
AFTER-SCHOOL SUPPORT
Corps members provide structure and resources for after-school and school vacation programming. After-school programming involves small-group homework help, as well as enrichment activities like arts, sports and computers.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP
One of the important ways City Year Los Angeles corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Los Angeles elementary, middle school, and high school students about their ability to make a difference.
STARFISH CORPS
In the Starfish Corps, third through sixth graders experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution in this literacy-based service program.
YOUNG HEROES
Young Heroes is City Year’s premier youth leadership initiative. Middle school students serve 100 hours on Saturdays from December through May and earn the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their efforts.
CITY HEROES
City Heroes is a weekend leadership development and social awareness program for high school students, who learn to lead others in tackling issues that directly affect their communities.

COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Throughout the year, corps members lead participate in monthly physical service and engagement projects, such as turning a vacant lot into a community garden or painting over graffiti to create vibrant street murals. These team-based projects make dramatic community transformations possible and offer opportunities for citizens of all backgrounds to join corps members in service. City Year also participates in physical service and engagement projects at various special events and holidays, including Opening Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and National Youth Service Day.
In an effort to make community service more accessible, the City Year Los Angeles Civic Engagement team focuses full-time on engaging more than 1,000 citizens of all ages in service. The team develops eleven transformative one-time service projects as well as create on-going volunteer opportunities for youth, business leaders, college students and community members.
