YOUNG HEROES

Are you in 6th, 7th or 8th grade?

Do you see problems in your neighborhood that young people could change if they had the chance?

Would you like to make a difference and meet new people from all over Seattle?

If you answered “yes,” then you should join Young Heroes!

What is Young Heroes?

Young Heroes is a community service and leadership development program for 6th, 7th and 8th graders throughout Seattle and the surrounding area.  With programs in eighteen other cities across the country, there are more than 2,000 middle school youth in Young Heroes each year!

What will you do?

On Saturdays, every Young Hero meets their team of 8 to 12 middle school students and their Team Leaders at 9 am to practice PT (physical training), and then participate in a leadership workshop on that day’s social issue topic.  Topics include Hunger and Homelessness, Aging and the Elderly, Youth Violence and Disability Awareness.   In the afternoon, teams are led in a community service project that addresses the issue they learned about that morning.

Who can join?

Anyone can apply!  All you need is a strong desire to help others and give back to the community, as well as be willing and able to commit to at least 13 Saturdays of service in between January and May.

For additional information contact Joe LaCasse at 206-219-5013 or youngheroesseattle@cityyear.org.

CITY HEROES

Are you in high school?

Do you need to complete your service learning hours?

Are you ready to learn about important social issues and make a positive change in the Seattle community?

Then you should join City Heroes!

What is City Heroes?

City Heroes is a program that brings together high school students from diverse backgrounds for six months of intensive leadership development, social awareness and community service that runs from January to May.  We want young people to believe in the power they have to make a positive impact now and throughout their lives.

What will you do?

City Heroes meet two to three times each month.  Participants closely examine a social issue that affects their communities and themselves.  They learn, discuss and debate, and leave with the determination to initiate positive change.  Later that month, their determination turns into action as they complete transformational service projects in neighborhoods and schools that are directly affected by the issue.

Who can join?

Any high school aged student in Seattle and the King County area can apply.  All you need is a strong desire to help others and give back to the community, and be willing and able to commit to at least 13 Saturdays of service in between January and May.

For additional information contact Dawn Jackowski at (206) 219-5012 or at (206) 306-5720.  You can also email cityheroesseattle@cityyear.org.
