A day ON - not a day off!
January 19, 2009!
"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love."
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day City Year corps members from across the country lead community members and friends nationwide in celebrating and honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his commitment to social justice and civil rights through a day of transformative service projects. City Year Detroit partners with several metropolitan Detroit organizations and engages more than 400 local volunteers annually to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through projects such as:
- Sorting donations to be given to needy families at Family2Family
- Pre-building 40 houses at Habitat For Humanity Detroit
- Packing books for Detroit Public School children at Kiwanis Book Club
- Facilitating craft projects with senior citizens at Arden Courts
- Assembling art kits for school children at Art-N-Scraps
- Housekeeping and yard work for homebound senior citizens at Bridging Communities
This year's event will kick off with an inspirational rally starting at 9:30am sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield and will be held at their Bricktown Office Building (located in Downtown Detroit). We will also be joined by Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. who will present a special tribute to Dr. King during the rally and serve along side our volunteers for this most honored event. We invite you to join us on this day to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King in 2009.
