City Year Detroit’s Young Heroes and City Heroes programs engage youth in service and leadership development activities that connect them to their community on a variety of topics such as homelessness, hunger, violence prevention and disability awareness. Through these corps member-led programs, youth have the opportunity to serve together on diverse teams and deepen their belief that they can make a difference.
Young Heroes : Middle School Youth
On Saturdays from January to May, corps members teach middle-school students how to become leaders in their communities. The typical day of a Young Hero includes interactive lessons and activities planned around a particular social topic, a related community service project, and a journal reflection. See our heroes flyer for more info!
City Heroes : High School Youth
High school students in the City Heroes program spend 2-3 weekends each month building their awareness and understanding of social issues in their community and increasing their desire and ability to work with others to address them.Activities include interactive lessons, debates related to a monthly topic, and hands-on community service.
