“A Day On, Not A Day Off”
Celebrating Dr. King´s birthday as a "day ON, not a day off," City Year sites across the country engaged hundreds of volunteers in service projects, such as working with seniors, feeding the homeless, painting murals, restoring parks, and running educational activities for children – making a difference in their communities and honoring Dr. King's legacy through service. At City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock, City Year corps members, Young Heroes, and over 200 volunteers landscaped, beautified, and painted murals illustrating the continuance of Dr. King's dream at Kanis Park, G.W. Carver YMCA, and Salvation Army in Little Rock and the Boys and Girls Club in North Little Rock.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day also marked Young Heroes Opening Day, a high-energy ceremony to kick-off the City Year leadership development and community service program for middle school students. On Monday, January 19, more than 70 middle school students in Central Arkansas began their six month commitment to community service by taking their pledge and bursting into a powerful, transformative service project the following day.
