This year, 33 young adults kicked off their year of service on Friday, October 2, 2009 on the steps of the Arkansas Capitol Building. Immediately following the ceremony, the newly inducted City Year corps members burst into transformative service by creating four large murals alongside pariticipants of the Baptist Health onsite Childcare Center. These murals were given back to the Center as a reminder of the spirit of community service.
Opening Day, an annual tradition at City Year dating back to the organization's pilot program in 1988, launches the corps and the organization as a whole into powerful year of service. It is at Opening Day that City Year corps members pledge to serve ten months of full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models.
