As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in students' lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock’s service programs include in-school service, youth leadership programs, special initiatives, and community engagement.

IN-SCHOOL SERVICE PROGRAMS
You will spend four days every week in a school leading one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions. In the afternoon, you will run an after-school program. Over the course of the year, you and your team of eight to ten corps members will help at least 100 children improve their academic performance, attendance and behavior.
Youth Literacy
City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock corps members provide intense, one-on-one literacy tutoring during the school day. Through partnerships like the Little Rock School District's Office of Professional Development, you will receive training to evaluate a student's skill level and tutor them accordingly so the student improves course performance.
You will also participate in the following specialized City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock in-school programs:
- Morning Greeting and Specialty Groups: Each morning corps members along with the school staff will be the first to arrive. Corps members will greet students and mentor a group of 3-5 students.
- Lunch Mentors: During lunch periods, corps members spend one-on-one mentoring time with upper-grade level students who may need extra attention and motivation. While eating, students and corps members engage in conversation about school, friends, and hot topics such as respect, attitude and self-control.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
One of the important ways City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Little Rock and North Little Rock elementary school students about their ability to make a difference.
Starfish Corps
In the Starfish Corps, K-5th graders experience a “mini-City Year,” participating in homework help and learning about social issues such as peace, the environment, and health.
Morning Program
As a part of reaching students through all parts of the school day, City Year corps members run morning programs before school for students who take part in the school breakfast program. During morning program, students receive homework help and take part in clubs that teach the importance of student governance, sportsmanship, and respect.
SPECIAL INITIATIVES
City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock has a number of special initiatives that extend the reach of our program. These initiatives allow us to explore specific topics in depth, provide critical services to Central Arkansas, and present corps members with opportunities to lead projects that transform the community.
Camp City Year

City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock meets the critical need of providing a safe, educational, and fun program during spring break in both school districts for youth who do not have a meaningful alternative for this out-of-school time. This week-long program, led entirely by corps members, engages children in a dynamic curriculum that promotes the themes of service, diversity, responsibility, and idealism.

Global Youth Service Day
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is celebrated across the country and here at City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock it is no exception. For our celebration of GYSD we seek to engage all of our program participants, from Starfish to Corps Members in physical service and hands-on programming around a selected topic.
COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members strive to be "big citizens" in Little Rock and North Little Rock. Because they often live in the areas where City Year serves, corps members demonstrate that they have a large stake in improving communities in Central Arkansas.
City Year illustrates the meaning of service-in-action by transforming different areas in Little Rock or North Little Rock through physical service projects such as:
- Renovating schools
- Painting murals
- Planting gardens
- Creating play spaces
By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work and making a difference together, corps members help share the power of service.
Civic Engagement
Much like our elementary Whole School, Whole Child teams, this team runs literacy interventions in a small group setting in the mornings four days per week. In the afternoons the civic engagement program is dedicated to direct community involvement. This program gives a team of five members an opportunity to regularly participate in visitor round tables, attend community meetings, and works to educate the community on the importance of wearing the red jacket.
