Timberland: In 1989, City Year’s co-founders approached The Timberland Company and Jeffrey Swartz, former CEO, with a practical request. They needed 50 pairs of boots for City Year corps members who were preparing to serve in the neighborhoods of Boston. What began with that donation has since developed into a much deeper partnership: Timberland was the first company to become a National Leadership Sponsor; Swartz served as Chair of City Year’s National Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2002; and the company is now City Year’s Official Footwear Provider.
Every step City Year has taken has literally been in Timberland boots. Timberland helped found City Year New York by sponsoring a team and several service initiatives. Timberland also helped establish City Year New Hampshire in 2000 which was housed in Timberland’s global headquarters until it moved to Manchester in 2010 to be closer to the schools in which corps members serve. In addition, Timberland is a Gold Team Sponsor and has engaged Care Force®, a business division of City Year, to lead service days with Timberland employees, and supports City Year Boston through an endowment used for special projects like curriculum development for spring camp. Timberland is City Year’s Official Green Partner, working together to strengthen environmental stewardship. In partnership with City Year, Timberland continues to redefine what a company and a nonprofit organization can do together.
"Over the past 20 years, the relationship between City Year and Timberland has grown from official footwear provider to a partnership in helping students and schools succeed. For the past 10 years, we have seen first-hand the energy, dedication and idealism of City Year New Hampshire corps members as they shared our headquarters as home base. City Year’s red jackets have become symbols of service and a mutual commitment to our communities. As City Year begins a second decade in New Hampshire, we are thrilled to see City Year expand to have a greater impact on the schools and communities where they’re needed most. Their presence and influence in our community are deeply felt – and valued – within Timberland."
- Jeff Swartz, Former President and CEO, The Timberland Company
