Position Overview:

City Year Boston is seeking an articulate and inspiring Communications Manager who will lead the site’s communications and branding efforts and build systems to support our greater external affairs goals. Reporting to the Deputy Director – External Affairs, and working closely with a broad range of City Year staff and supporters, the Communications Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all external communications maintain the integrity of the City Year brand and support the organization’s efforts to establish itself as a leader in the education community. In addition, the Communications Manager will have primary responsibility for executing in the areas of brand management, copywriting and editing, media relations, layout and design, electronic media, stakeholder engagement and marketing.

Responsibilities:

COPYWRITING AND EDITING: draft and edit text for external communications documents, including but not limited to event scripts, speaker remarks, site-wide correspondence, correspondence on behalf of the Executive Director and Advisory Board, program collateral, and recruitment materials; develop and implement a document approval process for staff- and corps-created documents. LAYOUT AND DESIGN: create and regularly update simple collateral and templates (e.g. info kits, one-pagers, etc.) that reflect City Year’s brand and City Year Boston’s service programs and local impact; work closely with City Year Inc. Communications staff and/or external contractors to develop design-intensive collateral (e.g. program books, brochures, posters, etc.) that reflects City Year’s brand. BRAND MANAGEMENT: ensure that all external communications maintain continuity with all aspects of the City Year brand; rrain staff and corps to understand and implement the elements of the City Year brand; create and regularly update a repository of photos, quotes, logos and templates for use by staff and corps when developing documents. CORPS MEMBER MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT: manage the day-to-day performance and yearlong professional development of one Communications Senior Corps member who produces and distributes content and organizes The Visitor Program; support the professional development of the entire City Year corps by providing training and support in areas such as writing for newsletters and websites, providing testimonials on their service experience, and public speaking. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT: lead the Communications Senior Corps Member to execute The Visitor Program, in conjunction with other City Year Boston and City Year Inc. departments, a program which enables strategic leaders of the private, public and civic sectors to learn more about City Year by engaging them in a tour of the headquarters or a service site and a roundtable with corps members. ELECTRONIC MEDIA: lead the Communications Senior Corps Member to develop and manage a team of corps members who, as one part of their responsibilities, will be responsible for generating regular content for use in electronic media, which tells the story of their service year; lead the Communications Senior Corps Member to maintain and regularly update the electronic media infrastructure, including but not limited to the site home page, email distribution list, electronic newsletters, blog and social media accounts. MEDIA RELATIONS: develop and maintain relationships with print, radio and television media stakeholders; write media advisories and press releases for major organizational events and announcements; develop and pitch timely stories that highlight City Year’s corps members and impact in schools. MARKETING: in partnership with the External Affairs Deputy Director, develop and execute a long-term plan to increase City Year brand awareness amongst 17-24 year olds using free or low-cost marketing efforts.

Requirements:

- BA/BS degree required- 1-3 years of direct communications experience with progressive responsibilities- Demonstrated experience in at least three of the following areas: brand management, copywriting and editing, layout and design, media relations, and electronic media and marketing- Proven ability to lead a diverse team to meet project goals and build individuals’ communication skills- Exceptional oral and written communication skills with an ability to engage and inspire a wide range of audiences- Strategic, analytical approach combined with a strong work ethic, and interpersonal professionalism- Excellent organizational skills, ability to handle multiple tasks and think critically- Deep understanding of City Year’s mission and the national service movement is helpful- AmeriCorps/City Year alumni are encouraged to apply
