Among Top 4 Percent of Rated Nonprofits
Thursday, July 16, 2009 – For the fifth consecutive year, Charity Navigator, the leading independent evaluator of nonprofits’ financial accountability, sustainability and efficiency, has awarded City Year its highest rating of 4-stars.
“Only 4% of the charities we rate have received at least 5 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that City Year consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America, “ stated Ken Berger, President and Chief Executive Officer of Charity Navigator when announcing the 4-star rating. “This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates City Year from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
The Charity Navigator rating system is designed to provide more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results in an increasingly competitive nonprofit environment. Charity Navigator is estimated to influence more than $10 billion in charitable giving last year alone by conducting research, providing information and highlighting efficient organizations.
"City Year is honored to receive this recognition from Charity Navigator," said City Year, Inc. CEO Michael Brown. "We take our responsibilities with regard to fiscal management, program investment and donor assurance with the utmost seriousness and commitment. We are deeply grateful to our stakeholders across the country who have helped us achieve these strong financial and programmatic results."
“City Year has worked closely with its corporate partners to incorporate best financial management practices into City Year,” said Stephen G. Woodsum, the Chair of the City Year, Inc. Board of Trustees. “The top marks from Charity Navigator are an outstanding recognition of City Year’s strong commitment to both program impact and sound management principles.”
This recognition of organizational efficiency and operational health coincides with the launch of City Year’s major initiative to address the nation's high school dropout crisis, In School & On Track: A National Challenge. The Charity Navigator rating underscores that City Year and the 1,500 corps members who will soon begin their year of full-time service are poised and prepared to help thousands of students nationwide graduate high school and succeed.
