TIME Magazine’s Richard Stengel Joins City Year, Inc. Board of Trustees

April 28, 2009– City Year is pleased to announce that Richard Stengel, Managing Editor of TIME, has joined the City Year, Inc. Board of Trustees.

Stengel, who oversees one of the world’s largest news brands with an audience of over 28 million people, wrote two TIME cover stories on national service that helped lead the charge towards recent passage of the Serve America Act.

His 2007 essay, “The Case for National Service," included the declaration that, “The way to get citizens involved in civic life, the way to create a common culture that will make a virtue of our diversity, the way to give us that more capacious sense of ‘we’ is universal national service.” Stengel recently testified before Congress in favor of the Serve America Act, saying, “America is at a critical moment right now where national service can help us solve many of our most acute national problems. At a time like this, service is not a luxury but an effort that can help us rebuild, restore confidence and prepare for the future.”

In his new role as a member of the City Year, Inc. Board of Trustees, Stengel will further his commitment to national service by shaping the organization's strategic plans for growth and heightened impact. City Year is a non-profit organization that annually engages 1,500 diverse, young people in full-time service as tutors, mentors and role models dedicated to helping underserved children and communities succeed. City Year was founded in 1988, operates in 20 locations, and is guided by the vision that one day the most commonly asked question of a young person will be “where are you going to do your year of service?”

“Rick has been one of the most compelling voices for national service in the media and we are proud to welcome him to City Year’s National Board of Trustees,” said City Year CEO and Co-Founder Michael Brown. “Rick realizes that the time for national service is now. His leadership of TIME’s extensive and powerful coverage of service, his role as co-moderator of the Presidential Forum on National Service on September 11, 2008 with then-Senator Obama and Senator McCain and his powerful Congressional testimony establish that he is inspired, inspiring and influential.”

“We are pleased to have Rick join the City Year board at this critical inflection point for the organization,” said Stephen G. Woodsum, the Chair of the Board and the Founding Managing Director of Summit Partners. “Now in our 20th year of serving young people, Rick’s expertise and passion for advancing service - and particularly youth service - will greatly benefit City Year and all who care about the power of national service to change lives and strengthen our nation.”
