At City Year’s locations across the United States, young people (corps members) serve full-time for 10 months, each providing more than 1,700 hours of service.

School-Based Service
Corps members serve in schools as tutors, mentors, role models and leaders of after-school programs. As a City Year corps member, you will help students stay on track and get back on track to graduate by helping them improve course performance, attendance and behavior. This school-based service is at the heart of City Year’s Whole School, Whole Child approach to helping children and schools succeed.
Youth Leadership
One of the important ways corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach elementary, middle and high school students how to be active citizens in their communities and make a difference.
Community Transformation
In addition to helping schools and students succeed, City Year corps members transform their communities through physical service. By engaging community members, corporate partners and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service through projects such as painting murals, planting gardens, creating playspaces, renovating schools and refurbishing community centers.

LEADERSHIP | TUTOR | ROLE MODELS |
"I joined City Year to work with children and show them they are able to make a difference in the world. This year, I have been working with a 1st grader named Erik who, at the beginning of the school year, had trouble paying attention in class and was reading below grade level. During the year, I provided one-on-one literacy tutoring to Erik – together we sounded out words and took the extra time we needed to concentrate on learning. Now, he is reading at the 2nd grade level and is able to better focus on his work.”
