City Year Patch

give a year. change the world.

Diverse Teams

TEAM-BASED SERVICEJackethug

Teamwork is at the heart of City Year’s approach to service and social change. As a City Year corps member, you will be assigned to a team at the beginning of the year and will serve with that team for the duration of the year.

  • Team Structure

Teams are made up of 6-12 corps members who have a diverse mix of life experiences and skills sets.

  • Team Unity

City Year corps and staff start each morning by gathering at a central location for “Unity Rally” – an opportunity to wake up and prepare for the hard day’s work that lies ahead. PT is the highlight of Unity Rally, but it is more than just doing jumping jacks or lunges. It is a demonstration of corps members’ commitment to each other and to their communities.

When you come together to start your day, you are reminded that you are not in this alone, that you can rely on your team members, and that making a difference is a group effort.

As a City Year corps member, you will be a member of a highly diverse group of young people who are determined to make a difference. You will serve alongside people from different racial, ethic, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds.

  • Interacting with and working alongside individuals with different perspectives and life experiences breaks down social barriers and helps us see what we have in common.
  • Witnessing diverse teams of people working together successfully can be an invaluable learning experience for you as well as the communities and children you serve.
“I have gotten to know and learn from all kinds of people – some are completely different from me in terms of background, race, and class. I like the fact that I now can relate to all different people, and let them get to know me.  Before City Year, I think I accepted diversity. Now, I celebrate it.”
