City Year Patch

MLK Service Day

Make January 16th, 2012 "a day ON, not a day OFF!"

Champion of Citizen Service Honoree and Keynote Speaker
Dr. John Covington
Chancellor, Education Achievement System
State of Michigan

Each year, City Year corps members, community members and friends nationwide celebrate and reflect on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. City Year’s annual MLK Day of Service is our commitment to build what Dr. King called the “Beloved Community” through transformative community service projects that bring together diverse groups of Americans on this national holiday. City Year’s young adult corps members lead middle and high school students, parents and community members together in volunteer service in partnership with numerous Detroit area non-profit organizations, including the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. Projects include service activities such as:
  • Beautifying (interior clean-up/mural painting, etc.) schools and community centers
  • Sorting and packaging food at food banks
  • Sorting donated clothing to be given to needy families
  • Sorting/packaging donated books for K-12 children

"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
