A Day in the Life

When you serve with City Year every day is a chance to make a difference.  No two days will be exactly alike, but here is an example of what a typical day might be like with City Year Detroit:

8:30am: Every day begins at City Year Detroit headquarters, located in Detroit’s New Center Area, in full uniform with a can-do attitude ready to serve.
8:40am: Morning program at a prominent public place in the city, such as Campus Martius park. Morning program consists of announcements and City Year’s signature “PT” – Physical Training – spirited calisthenics and other energizing warm-ups.
9:00am:  Travel by van to school. 
9:30am: The day is filled with structured mentoring and tutoring programs such as: one-on-one literacy instruction, small group math curriculum, peer mediation session etc.
12:00pm: Lunch! Sometimes lunch can also serve is bonding time with the kids in the cafeteria or on the playground!
3:30pm:Afterschool programs begin: science club, arts & crafts class, environment club, soccer programs and more. 
5:00 pm:Corps members return to headquarters to debrief the events of the day. On alternate Fridays, corps members also participate in Signature Service (physical service initiatives) and Leadership Development Days (training).
