In 1999, City Year Detroit launched with more than 50 corps members who pledged to change the lives of children and neighborhoods throughout the Detroit metro area. Gail Warden, then President/CEO of the Henry Ford Health System, was appointed as Chair of the Founding Board. He continues to play an active role in our work along with a robust board leadership team of top executives from key agencies and corporations.
Today, City Year Detroit has members that serve in 6 schools providing one-on-one tutoring, in classroom support, drama clubs, craft classes and homework help stations. We also partner with more than 50 community organizations each year providing 81,000 hours of service to help physically restore buildings, feed the homeless and build safe spaces in local parks for kids.
