Diplomas Now Detroit
Diplomas Now is a proven approach to helping the toughest schools in America’s largest cities succeed in helping every student graduate ready for college or career. It is the first fully integrated approach that improves a school’s curriculum and instruction as it provides the right students with the right support to accomplish the right results.
City Year Detroit is excited to announce that Detroit Collegiate Prep is the newest school to be run by the nationally proven Diplomas Now collaborative model created to keep at‐risk students on track for college success. The new school is a Detroit Public School “priority school” open to all students in the city starting Fall 2011. Diplomas Now’s rigorous instruction is based on data‐driven teaching. A 9th Grade Success Academy assists students’ transition to high school. All students arriving at the school enroll in a Freshman Seminar to learn social, communication, and conflict management skills as well as explore college and career choices. Detroit Collegiate Prep combines college preparatory academics with “double dose” courses in math and language arts for students needing an extra boost to reach their college goals.
Like every Diplomas Now school, Detroit Collegiate Prep is supported by three partner organizations working to provide all students with the support they need on the road to graduation and beyond.
• Talent Development, an education success model developed by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Organization of Schools
On‐site Talent Development staffers will work with Diplomas Now Detroit teachers to help them meet state standards and curriculum benchmarks.
• City Year, a yearlong AmeriCorps tutroping and mentoring program.
Young adult leaders will act as “near peer” mentors to Diplomas Now Detroit students both in the classroom and throughout the school. City Year corps members are trained to provide targeted coaching and academic interventions as well as tutor and lead extracurricular activities.
• Communities In Schools, the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization
An on‐site Communities In Schools staffer will serve as a vital resource for Diplomas Now Detroit families, including connecting families with community support organizations and specialists.

COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects two Friday's a month. These restoration projects help break down social barriers and inspire people to serve. By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service. Approximately 2 times each month, the entire corps participates in a day-long physical project, such as: - Turning a vacant lot into a community garden;
- Painting vibrant murals over graffiti; and
- Preparing meals for the homeless.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
| Our goal is to not only serve children and schools but to also inform and inspire others to action for the community. Corps members attend community events where they meet with and engage various dignitaries, legislators, executives and politicians. At these events they have an opportunity to represent City Year, helping to further our commitment to national service through inspiring others and network with leaders who can help transform their lives after their "city year." |
