As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year Columbus service programs include in-school and after-school service, youth leadership, and community engagement.
IN-SCHOOL AND AFTER SCHOOL SERVICE: Whole School Whole Child
When serving in the schools of Columbus, you will provide one-on-one literacy tutoring, classroom support, and take a leadership role in school-wide initiatives. You will help students who may not receive enough attention to succeed, becoming a reliable support system in a child’s life and apart of the fabric of the school community. As a City Year Columbus corps member, you will respond to the challenges facing public education by providing:
- Academic Support: Through the meaningful connections you develop with the students you serve, you will strengthen students’ skills that correlate with success and active learning in schools, encouraging competence and self confidence.
- Positive School Climate: You will support an environment where students want and are excited to learn by providing a diverse and peaceful peer network.
- After-School Programming: As a positive role model and mentor, you will reinforce key learning and development milestones and provide social enrichment programming that helps children succeed.
CAMP CITY YEAR
Camp City Year is a positive day camp experience conducted during spring break, providing assistance to working parents while teaching the core City Year values of diversity, service and responsibility. Learn more about Camp City Year.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
One of the important ways City Year Columbus corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Columbus elementary, middle school, and high school students about their ability to make a difference.
- Starfish Corps
In the Starfish Corps, third through fifth graders experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution in this literacy-based service program.
- Young Heroes
Young Heroes is City Year’s premier youth leadership initiative. Middle school students serve 80 hours on Saturdays from January through May and earn the Silver President’s Volunteer Service Award for their efforts.
- City Heroes
City Heroes is a weekend leadership development and social awareness program for high school students, who learn to lead others in tackling issues that directly affect their communities. 2007-08 marks the launch of City Year Columbus’s City Heroes program.

COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:
- Painting murals
- Planting gardens
- Creating playspaces
- Renovating schools
- Refurbishing community centers
