Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day
January 17, 2011

Hamilton STEM Academy
2047 Hamilton Avenue
Columbus, Ohio 43211

The King Holiday and Service Act of 1994 transformed the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday into a day of service that reflects his life and teachings. Each year, City Year corps members partner with local youth agencies to help deliver Dr. King’s message.

Our MLK Jr. Service Day, held January 17, was an energetic day full of service projects and happy faces! We engaged 50 children from Hamilton STEM Academy, where the event was held, and dozens of volunteers from near and far. Frito Lay provided volunteers (some all the way from Cincinnati), snacks and entertainment--including Chester The Cheetah! Thank you Frito Lay for all your help and generosity at our event!

Service projects included making a "Field of Dreams", where students created paper flowers with their own dreams written on them, and then placed them along the hallway walls of Hamilton. An inspiring field indeed! Another project was the "I Can" cookie, where children decorated cookies with encouraging words and designs about all the different talents and gifts they possess. Thank you to all the Activity Leaders for your creativity to all the projects.

Donatos Pizza, the preferred pizza of City Year Columbus, provided enough pizza to feed (and fill) 125 people! Thank you Donatos for your generosity, and continued support of City Year Columbus.

Thank You to our very own City Year Columbus MLK Day Committee members and staff--your hard work was evident. Job well done!

City Year Columbus would like to thank everyone for making our MLK Day the fantastic event that it was with a quote in honor of MLK: "Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." -Dr. Matin Luther King, Jr.
