This year City Year is celebrating its 21st anniversary as a national organization and its 16th year in Central Ohio.
Thanks to a committed delegation of Columbus business and community leaders, City Year came to Columbus, Ohio in 1994. Spearheaded by Erie Chapman, then CEO of US Health, and Priscilla Tyson, now a Columbus City Councilmember, this delegation believed strongly that young people in Central Ohio needed a vehicle to create positive change.
Since its inception, City Year Columbus has responded to a profound need in Columbus – literacy development for children in grades K-3. City Year Columbus corps members for the past 15 years have served as tutors, mentors and consistent role models to hundreds of Columbus City School children.
Since 1994, City Year Columbus has:
- Served over one million hours;
- Made a difference in the lives of more than 75,000 children and youth;
- Engaged over 10,000 community volunteers, contributing more than 75,000 hours of service; and
- Graduated more than 575 corps members.
