South Carolina’s Capital City is one of the most historic cities in the Southeast. With a resident population of approximately 130,000 and a metropolitan area population of 750,000, Columbia also receives an influx of young adults moving into the city every fall because of the city’s four colleges and universities. One of the first planned communities in this country, Columbia was established in 1786 as a centrally located state capital. Columbia lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Saluda and the Broad, which join to form the Congaree River. As the Palmetto State's capital and college town, Columbia's fiery vibe cultivates a colorful arts scene while an indie spirit envelops several energized entertainment districts overflowing with locally owned boutique shops, eateries, spas and salons, and night spots. For those with an adventerous spirit, the rivers, trails or the Congaree National Park will provide endless fun. With over 450 restaurants, South Carolina’s largest Museum, Riverbanks Zoo (a national award-winning zoo), 10 parks, and the Fort Jackson training base, Columbia is home to smiling faces and beautiful places. City Year Columbia corps members live in various neighborhoods across the Greater Columbia area. Every unique neighborhood features countless activities for corps members to enjoy on any given night.

ROADTRIP TO FUN PLACES:
Because Columbia is located in the center of South Carolina, it is easy to take day or weekend trips to southern hot spots such as Charleston, Charlotte, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, or Atlanta with their many attractions. In less than two hours, you can be in the mountains or at the beach! In addition to having a full service airport with six major airlines, Columbia also features Amtrak and Greyhound stations. Three interstates (I-20, I-26, and I-77) run through Columbia, making Columbia a convenient driving portal to many cities along the east coast.
