Service Summary: City Heroes is a Saturday program for high school students to make a difference through service. The City Heroes team creates curriculum and organizes the program from start to finish, running from January to May. High school students learn about various social issues each month and have one Saturday per month of physical service. During the week, City Heroes teams serve at two high schools. The high schools will each have a resource room where students can come and be tutored, connect with members of Cleveland’s corporate sector for mentoring, as well as college prep training (SAT and Ohio Graduation Test-OGT prep). The team will also act as a support base for volunteers coming into the high schools to serve.

Service Summary: By answering an eighth grader’s questions, “Why can’t I be in City Year?”, City Year corps members created a program aimed at developing the next generation of civic leaders in their community, while fulfilling a critical need for safe, constructive, out-of-school-time for middle school age children. The Young Heroes Team runs a 15 week program for middle school youth on Saturdays: the first half of each Saturday consists of a workshop on a social justice issue or leadership topic with the second half consisting of service relating to the workshop topic. The team also serves during the week at four elementary schools, two on the eastside and two on the west side. At these K-8 schools, Young Heroes Team members will conduct tutoring, act as role modelsand run after-school programs.
