CITY YEAR CLEVELAND LAUNCHES AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

WHAT: The vast majority of Cleveland students lack basic after school programming. City Year Cleveland corps members will deliver much needed after school programs at six Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools. Corps members will (1) manage all programs, (2) serve as mentors for children, (3) provide a safe space for students to go, and (4) deliver a variety of activities ranging from homework help to public service projects.

WHEN and WHERE: City Year Cleveland’s youth leadership after school programs will begin on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the following six Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools:

· Starfish Corps – Clark K-8 (Detroit Shoreway), Luis Muñoz Marin K-8 (Tremont), Mound K-8 (North Broadway) and Miles Park K-8 (Union/Miles Park), Monday through Thursday in the afternoon.

· Young Heroes – Clark K-8, Luis Muñoz Marin K-8, Mound K-8, and Miles Park K-8, Tuesday through Thursday in the afternoon.

· City Heroes – South High School (South Broadway) and Lincoln West High School (Clark-Fulton), Monday through Thursday in the afternoon.

STARFISH CORPS: This program focuses on third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Corps members will offer safe, structured, and fun activities after school. Along with conducting homework workshops, corps members will teach students about issues affecting their community. For example, students will explore the issue of community service and work on neighborhood service projects to enhance their communities. On January 19, students will participate in City Year Cleveland’s Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day.

YOUNG HEROES: This program is designed for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Corps members will again provide assistance with homework as well as present a middle school grade curriculum based on social issues that impact the communities in which the children live. Depending on student interests, some schools may incorporate art or book clubs into their after school programs.

CITY HEROES: The City Heroes Program is an after school program for high school students. Although City Year will offer homework help when needed, these programs emphasize community service and citizenship. For example, South High School students will paint multiple murals and inspirational messages at A. B. Hart Middle School.
