For the final night of 100 Hours of Power, City Year Chicago corps members and volunteers visited Chicago's Englewood neighborhood on the south side. City Year partnered with Imagine Englewood If…, an organization seeking to make a difference in the lives of community members residing in Englewood and Promoting Education Against Crime in Englewood (P.E.A.C.E.), which seeks to build a safer environment in Englewood.
Read what corps members, volunteers and service partners had to say about the final overnight service projects during 100 Hours of Power!
From a Community Volunteer:
Curtis, student at Nicholson Elementary
- What was your initial reaction when you hear City Year was performing 100 hours of service day and night? I think that is good because you are helping the community and cleaning up the community. It’s 100 hours, and maybe people will walk by and see us planting flowers and want to clean up their block.
- What motivated you to come out and serve with us tonight?
I want to be a part of something constructive and to help my school look nice. I want to be a part of something to help the school. I also want to stay out of trouble, and a lot of kids probably don’t do this.
- Describe your project and what it has meant to you. I pulled weeds in the garden. It feels good to know that I’m doing something to help.
From our Service Partner:
Chyrisse Dunnorm, Certified Youth Practitioner, P.E.A.C.E
- How will this overnight service benefit your organization? It’s a project being done that’s worth while and needed to be done. It benefits the children, they will notice something new in their home.
- What do you think about the 100 Hours of Power event in general? It’s wonderful. I’ve never heard of it. I think children and teenagers should be a part of this experience.
From the City Year Chicago Corps:
Megan, City Year Chicago Corps Member
- What was your motivation for doing overnight service on top of your flagship service? It sounded like fun.
- How are you feeling right now? Be honest! Tired.
- Describe your project and what it has meant to you. We painting a large room in the P.E.A.C.E Center. I am excited to be done because it will look good.
From the Service Coordinators:
Zvi, City Year Chicago Senior Corps Member
- What’s been the most memorable part of planning your service for tonight? When I came to the P.E.A.C.E Center and saw everything that needed to be accomplished.
- Would you come back and serve during 100HOP next year? Yes.
- Describe your project and what it has meant to you. Our projects included gardening, mural painting and organizing spaces. This has been a great opportunity to show children that they can serve and help their own community through service.
