City Year Patch

Our Service Model

Tutoring InSchool--Cogswell

A Johns Hopkins University study found that students who are most at risk of dropping out of school can be identified as early as the 6th grade by early-warning indicators:
• poor Attendance
• unsatisfactory Behavior
Course failure in math or English

Supporting Students’ Academic Success

City Year recruits, trains and deploys diverse young leaders to serve full-time to help turn around the lowest performing schools in Boston. Utilizing proven prevention and intervention skills, corps members are trained to help improve student attendance, behavior, and course performance in 14 schools where they now serve by focusing on:

Attendance monitoring and incentive programs
Behavioral support as near-peer role models
Course performance in math and English through one-on-one and small group tutoring
• Extended day programming with emphasis on homework completion
• Creating a climate of high expectations and engagement

At three sites, City Year is implementing Diplomas Now, a collaboration among City Year, Communities In School, and Johns Hopkins University’s Talent Development to turn around school performance, social supports and professional development.

Transforming School Environments

SAT_mendellPlant_AndyDean

One team of corps members – the Boston Civic Engagement Team – recruits, trains and mobilizes more than1,200 volunteers annually to transform school communities through physical service. By engaging community members and corporate partners, corps members encourage others to make positive, holistic change through service.
