City Year Patch

Our Service Programs

As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year Boston service programs include in-school and after-school serviceyouth leadership, and community engagement

Each corps member is placed on one of the diverse teams serving Boston.  Whether working with youth in a classroom or during out of school time, each corps member will spend his or her 1,700 hours of service with a diverse population of students, as well as fellow corps members.

IN-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE

School Partnerships

When serving in the schools of Boston, you will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring.  You will help students who may not receive enough attention to succeed academically due to class size or other classroom dynamics.

Corps members serve as tutors and mentors, coordinate after-school programs, extracurricular activities, service projects, and leadership opportunities and support efforts to engage parents, community members, and volunteers. Through our comprehensive model that emphasizes literacy and civic engagement, we seek to improve the academic achievement and character development of students while enhancing the overall capacity and performance of schools.

Civics In Action

The corps members on this team teach an engaging civics curriculum to eighth graders in three middle schools across Boston.  In addition to learning about the fundamentals of civics and democracy, the students are engaged in hands-on civic problem solving. They work in teams to identify and research an issue of concern to them and carryout a project to solve or address that issue.

Environmental Initiative

The corps members on “the Green Team” teach an environmental awareness curriculum to students in two elementary schools. The hands-on curriculum enhances essential academic skills science while fostering a greater awareness and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Volunteer Engagement

The corps members on this team focus full-time on engaging citizens of all ages in service:  youth, college students, employees, community residents, and seniors.  They develop several transformative, one-time service projects as well as create on-going volunteer opportunities

City Year for Kids

Corps members will lead the planning and implementation of City Year’s hallmark out-of-school program, City Year for Kids. Winter and Spring programs will engage over 1,300 children collectively during Febuary and April school vacation. Children are led through a week of activities focusing on inclusivity, community service and social issues that impact themselves, their families and their communities.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP

One of the important ways City Year corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Boston elementary, middle school, and high school students about their ability to make a difference.

Starfish Corps

In the Starfish Corps Afterschool Program, elementary schools students experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution in this literacy-based service program

Young Heroes

Young Heroes is the middle school version of City Year. The corps members on this team organize the entire service and leadership program. Middle school students commit to serving nearly every Saturday for five months – each providing over 100 hours of community service.  Throughout the program they learn about teamwork, diversity, and leadership and are exposed to major social and community issues.

City Heroes

City Heroes is City Year’s youth leadership corps program for high school students.  The program engages high school students in one overnight a month learning about teamwork, diversity, leadership, and major social and community issues.  The students also spend 1-2 Saturdays a month doing community service in the neighborhoods of Boston.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:

  • Painting murals
  • Planting gardens
  • Creating playspaces
  • Renovating schools
  • Refurbishing community centers

By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
