As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year Boston service programs include in-school and after-school service, youth leadership, and community engagement.
Each corps member is placed on one of 13 diverse teams serving Boston. Whether working with youth in a classroom or during after-school and vacation time, each corps member will spend his or her 1,700 hours of service with a diverse population of students, as well as fellow corps members.
IN-SCHOOL AND AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE
Ten of City Year Boston's thirteen teams serve in elementary schools throughout Boston. This school-based service is at the heart of City Year's Whole School Whole Child service model, which creates positive change in the lives of children and their school environment.
Through the Whole School, Whole Child service model, corps members provide:
- Academic Support - one-on-one and small group tutoring, helping students to develop the skills that correlate with success and active learning, while they receive the attention they need to succeed academically.
- Afterschool Programming - These after-school programs go beyond homework assistance and activities to incorporate a curriculum-based service learning program called the Starfish Corps. Students particpating in the Starfish Corps are introduced to the concepts of community service and active citizenship while developing an appreciation of team work.
- Positive School Climate - The City Year team contributes to an overall school environment in which students want to engage in learning, address needs in their communities through service, and feel connected to a diverse network of near-peer role models.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
One of the important ways City Year corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Boston middle and high school students about their ability to make a difference.
Young Heroes
Young Heroes is the middle school version of City Year. The corps members on the Young Heroes team, sponsored by Bank of America, organize the entire service and leadership program. This year, 150 Young Heroes will spend three Saturdays a month from Januray to May, learning about teamwork, diversity, leadership skills, and and major social justice and community issues. At the program's completion each Young Hero will have served over 100 hours of community service and earn a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
City Heroes
City Heroes is City Year’s youth leadership corps program for high school students. The program engages more than 80 high school students from throughout the Greater Boston area in one overnight a month learning about teamwork, diversity, leadership, and major social and community issues. The students spend 1-2 Saturdays a month providing community service in the neighborhoods of Boston.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:
- Painting murals
- Planting gardens
- Creating playspaces
- Renovating schools
- Refurbishing community centers
By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
