GIVING, BUILDING, and BELIEVING : Serve-a-thon 2009
On Saturday, May 30th, over 1,000 volunteers from across the Greater Boston area joined together in a day of transformative community service, ready to give their time, build their communities, and believe in the power of service. Serve-a-thon participants assembled at City Hall Plaza for the event Kick-Off, featuring remarks from Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Michael Roberge, the CIO and Executive Vice President for US investments of event sponsor MFS Investment Management®. Following the high-energy ceremony, volunteers boarded buses and deployed to service sites throughout the neighborhoods of Roxbury and Jamaica Plain.
By 10 am, volunteers were hard at work at 22 different locations in the two neighborhoods; including schools, housing developments, parks, community centers, and local non-profit organizations. Across Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, hundreds of volunteers painted murals, walls, and fences, while others landscaped, planted trees and flowers, and picked up trash. Still more were hard at work constructing bookshelves, benches and raised garden beds.
City Year corps members on the CSX team led volunteers in landscaping and painting at the Hennigan Elementary school, where the team serves throughout the year as tutors and mentors. Meanwhile, employees of MFS Investment Management® worked with community volunteers to transform the Lewis Middle School into a welcoming learning environment for 1st – 5th graders, in preparation for the Lewis’s September transformation into a K – 8 school. A few miles away, Target volunteers refurbished the Marcella Park and the Urban Edge Community Development Corporation in Jackson Square. At the end of the day, Serve-a-thon volunteers had completed over 5,000 hours of total service, finishing over 90 service projects, and demonstrating for all who were involved in the day, the true power of community service.
