On Martin Luther King, Jr, Day more than 200 Boston middle school and high school students gathered to honor the memory of Dr. King as they began their five-month participation in the City Year Heroes Program.

Immediately following the inspirational ceremony, City Year Boston Young Heroes, City Heroes and corps members led 650 parents, family, friends, community leaders and corporate community partners in a Legacy March which covered 1.3 miles in the Boston neighborhood to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

City Year Boston’s Heroes Opening Day/MLK Day celebration included inspirational words from:

  • Mayor Menino
  • Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral
  • Ron Bell from Governor Patrick’s Office
  • Councilor Chuck Turner
  • Monté Foster from Bank of America
Mayor Thomas Menino offered advice to the incoming Young Heroes and City Heroes, “Maintain the idealism that you have today. It’s contagious. Hold on to your idealism and you will become the leaders of tomorrow.”
