
More than 200 guests joined City Year Boston staff and corps on October 15 for the Opening Day ceremony at English High in Jamaica Plain. After the ceremony, roughly 400 volunteers deployed to indoor and outdoor service projects to transform English High into a vibrant space for learning for its 1,200 students.
The ceremony, led by City Year alumna and Boston Public Schools teacher Kareen Wilkinson, included moving remarks by corps members and guest speakers:
- Mayor Menino
- BPS Superintendent Dr. Johnson
- Senior Regional Vice President of Comcast Steve Hackley
- English High Headmaster Dr. Narcisse
Other special guests in attendance included:
- State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz
- Chief of MBTA Transit Police Paul MacMillan
- BPS Chief Accountability Officer Frank Barnes.
