The convention will culminate with a powerful day of transformative community service in Harlem and the Bronx, where participants will serve side-by-side with City Year corps and staff. Confirmed service projects include painting murals at the Hunts Point Recreation Center; landscaping at the Bryant Ave Community Garden; running a kid’s carnival at the Harlem PAL; and landscaping, rebuilding basketball courts, and painting hallways, libraries, and stairwells at PS 48, PS 129, IS 172, and IS 195.

Other highlights of this year’s convention include a forum on urban education, an awards ceremony recognizing City Year corps for outstanding service, a national service policy forum, and the City Year Alumni Leadership Conference, which will bring alumni together during cyzygy ’06 to celebrate their commitment to a lifetime of service.

Columbia University is a leading institute of higher learning located in the heart of New York City. The school’s urban campus provides an ideal location for five days of educational and interactive forums, inspirational speakers and high impact community service. As the Host University for cyzygy ‘06, Columbia has made it possible for the convention to take place by providing significant in-kind contributions for housing, food, and event venues.

“As members of a quintessential urban university community, all of us at Columbia are delighted to welcome City Year corps members from across the nation to our campus for this year’s cyzygy convention. Some of our students are City Year alumni, as surely many more will be in the future. That makes perfect sense because Columbia and City Year are built on the belief that a true education for active citizenship means learning how to live and work together in a diverse community of classmates and colleagues, being challenged by the ideas of others and by service to something larger than ourselves. City Year’s celebration of service will be right at home in New York City, and we are excited to have you join us in Morningside Heights.”
- Lee C. Bollinger, President, Columbia University

City Year’s annual convention was first held in Columbus in 1995 and since then has taken place in ten different cities across the country. The unusual name of the convention comes from the Greek word syzygy [siz-i-gee], which refers to the rare alignment of celestial bodies.

“As the culmination of a year of service – totaling more than a million hours of service by the City Year corps this year – cyzygy brings together an extraordinary community of citizens to celebrate of the power of national service and idealism in action. We are so grateful to Citigroup and Columbia University for their leadership sponsorship of this event.”
- Michael Brown, President, City Year, Inc.
