PUTTING IDEALISM TO WORK
Making City Year Los Angeles a reality

Inspired by City Year and the opportunity to put its idealism to work in Los Angeles, The Goldhirsh Foundation announced a $2 million challenge grant last year to launch City Year Los Angeles. The grant must be matched on a two-to-one basis over a four-year period. Since hitting the ground last summer, the City Year Los Angeles team has made significant progress towards meeting the challenge grant.

City Year Los Angeles is also working to spread its idealistic message across the city. On March 3, City Year had an opportunity to engage both Senator Hillary Clinton and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at the "Keep LA Beautiful" event. The team will continue to engage public officials and community leaders around Los Angeles to get them excited about the launch of City Year Los Angeles this fall.

SENIOR CORPS MEMBER PROFILE

Elden Marquez
Hometown: San Francisco, CA and Salt Lake City, UT
City Year Boston '06, Los Angeles '07

I joined the CYLA start-up team because: California is my original home and I always wanted to move to LA. When I heard City Year was coming to the great city of Los Angeles, I just had to be a part of bringing an organization I love so much to a city I feel the same about.

I love being a part of this team because: I am helping to build a site with people that all have different City Year experiences and culture pieces to bring to the table.

I serve because: City Year is a program that I feel strongly about. It is something that I feel everyone should do right out of high school for the experience and the development. I really felt like I needed to come back and serve in recruitment to help others take part in this experience.
